Short History

The first Romanian Kennel Club (The Society for the Improvement of the Canine Breed in Romania) was founded on April the 10th, 1927, in Bucharest, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Nicholas of Romania.
In 1933 this organization obtained legal status and became a member of the FCI.

After 1945, under the communist regime, this club ceased to exist. In 1969, a new kennel club was set up in Arad. “The Romanian Kennel Club” as it was named, became a member of the FCI on June 22, 1973.

Prior to the 1989 Romanian Revolution, the activities of the Romanian Kennel Club in the social and political climate of the communist period were quite limited and many breeds and/or blood lines were practically lost.
In 1990, following serious disagreements at the General Assembly of the Romanian Kennel Club held in Bucharest, the Romanian Kennel Club divided into two national organizations: the Romanian Kennel Club (R.K.C.) and the Union of the Independent Kennel Clubs in Romania (U.I.K.C.R.).
In March, 1996, the first step was made towards the reunification. The boards of judges of the two previously separated national kennel clubs were reunited under Dr. Atilla Kelemen.
Following this, all U.I.K.C.R. members joined the Romanian Kennel Club which led to the "de facto" reunification of the R.K.C. Later, the same year, a new statute was voted and a new board was elected. In 1996 FCI admits the Romanian Kennel Club as it’s associated member in Romania. Since 2001 the Romanian Kennel Club is a federal member of the FCI.
